What is SriLankan Airlines policy with regard to hand baggage?

The hand baggage allowance, to which each passenger is entitled, is subject to SriLankan Airlines’ conditions and limitations with regard to number, weight, and dimensions.

What is SriLankan Airlines policy with regard to checked baggage?

According to the Weight Concept, the weight of the Free Baggage Allowance is subject to SriLankan Airlines’ limitations, and you will be required to pay a charge for carriage of baggage in excess of the permitted Free Baggage Allowance. Nevertheless, the maximum weight per piece of checked baggage should not exceed 32 kg, and the maximum size is 158 cm (62 in) per piece.

As SriLankan Airlines does not fly directly to North, Central and South America, the Piece Concept is not applicable to SriLankan Airlines passengers. However, if the itinerary includes onward journeys to/from North, Central and South America on another carrier, passengers will be given the benefit of a two-piece baggage allowance provided you are through ticketed.

Hand Baggage

Each piece of hand baggage must weigh no more than 7 kg and measure no more than 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in) or a total of 115 cm (L+W+H).

In Economy Class, passengers are allowed one piece of hand baggage. In Business Class, passengers are allowed 2 pieces of hand baggage.

In addition to the hand baggage allowance, the following personal items will be accepted free of charge:

  • One laptop.
  • One handbag, purse or pocketbook.
  • One overcoat, wrap or blanket.
  • One umbrella or walking stick.
  • One camera or one pair of binoculars.
  • Infant toiletries and infant food for in-flight consumption – one bag up to 5 kg.
  • One infant carrycot or fully collapsible stroller (if space available).

Overhead racks and hand baggage facilities are available on all aircraft. Additionally, Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft are equipped with closets for hanging jackets and coats.

Checked Baggage

Free Baggage Allowance

For all routes except to/from North, Central, and South America, the Free Baggage Allowance set by the Weight Concept depends on the travel class:

  • Economy Class – 30 kg.
  • Business Class – 40 kg.

For all routes to/from North, Central, and South America, the Free Baggage Allowance set by the Piece Concept depends on the travel class:

  • Economy Class – 2 piece up to 23 kg each.
  • Business Class –  2 piece up to 32 kg each.

For all routes, the maximum weight per piece of checked baggage should not exceed 32 kg, and the maximum size is 158 cm (62 in) per piece.

Excess Baggage

For the carriage of baggage in excess of the Free Baggage Allowance, passengers will be required to pay excess baggage charges. Pre-purchased additional baggage allowance at discounted prices is available through the Contact Centre, ticket offices or travel agents. The following excess baggage rates per kg apply at the airport converted to applicable local currency at the time of check-in:

The following excess baggage rates per piece apply under the Piece Concept on routes to/from North, Central, and South America:

  • USD 75 – overweight free piece 23-32 kg, Economy Class only.
  • USD 250 – additional piece up to 32 kg, all classes.

Sporting Equipment

Passengers are permitted to check in one set of snow skiing equipment of maximum 11 kg at a  special  charge  equivalent  to  that  of 3 kg of excess baggage and one set of golf equipment of maximum 15 kg at a special charge equivalent to that of 6 kg of excess baggage. If the equipment is checked as part of the Free Baggage Allowance, the excess weight will be assessed either at the normal excess baggage rate or at the special rate, whichever is less. The normal excess baggage charge will apply if it exceeds the maximum weight and for any additional equipment (e.g., the second and third set).

Passengers may include in their Free Baggage Allowance only one set of equipment for one of the following sports: surfing, windsurfing or diving. For any excess weight, or if there is more than one set of equipment, excess baggage charges will apply at the normal rate.

Bicycles can be checked as part of the Free Baggage Allowance, and any excess weight will be assessed at the normal excess baggage rate.

Under the Piece Concept, one set of sporting equipment up to 32 kg is charged USD 250.

Baggage Services

In the unlikely event that your baggage is damaged or does not arrive at your destination while traveling on a flight operated by SriLankan Airlines, you must complete a Property Irregularity Report at the Baggage Services Counter on arrival.
