Island Air minors flying alone

Does Island Air offer any special service for children traveling alone?

For children traveling alone, Island Air offers an Escort Service which means that Island Air will provide supervision for the child from the time of boarding until the Unaccompanied Minor is met at the stopover point or destination. Children are considered Unaccompanied Minors when not accompanied on the same flight and in the same compartment by a passenger at least 12 years old.

What are the age restrictions on Island Air flights for children traveling alone?

Children younger than 5 years cannot travel alone on Island Air flights, under any conditions. They must be accompanied on the same flight and in the same cabin by another passenger at least 12 years old.

Children 5-11 years old, when traveling alone, are accepted only as Unaccompanied Minors.

Children 12-17 years old have no restrictions when traveling alone on Island Air flights. Upon request, the Escort Service may be provided for children 12-17 years old.

Are Unaccompanied Minors accepted when the itinerary involves a connecting flight?

Unaccompanied Minors are accepted for online transportation operated by Island Air only. Regardless of codeshare or interline agreements, Island Air will not transfer Unaccompanied Minors to other carriers.

Unaccompanied Minors 5-7 years old are accepted only on non-stop flights.

Unaccompanied Minors 8-17 years old are accepted for online transportation, on nonstop, direct and connecting flights.

Upon request, Escort Service for connections may be provided for children 12-17 years old who are making a connection enroute, including a connection from an Island Air flight to a flight operated by another carrier.

Island Air will not accept Unaccompanied Minors when the connecting flight is the last flight of the day scheduled to depart from the connecting point.

Unaccompanied Minor Escort Service

For all children 5-11 years old, the Escort Service is mandatory when traveling alone (not accompanied by a passenger at least 12 years old). When making reservations, you must advise the Reservations Agent that the booking is for an Unaccompanied Minor and provide the age of the child. The child must be accompanied to the airport by a parent or responsible adult and check in at the Check-in Counter at least 60 minutes prior to departure. Before Island Air accepts your child for travel, you must complete the Unaccompanied Minor form: your name and phone number, as the person dropping off the child, and name and phone number for the person picking up your child at the destination. Upon check-in, you are required to present an ID.

When you drop-off an Unaccompanied Minor, you must remain with the child until he/she enplaned. Children traveling alone are pre-boarded and introduced to the flight attendant as Unaccompanied Minors. Unaccompanied Minors are given first priority when deplaning the aircraft upon the flight’s arrival at its final destination. The child is escorted off the aircraft and released to another designated Island Air employee or the person designated on the Unaccompanied Minor form. The person picking up the Unaccompanied Minor must produce positive identification and sign a release for the Unaccompanied Minor.

Fees

In addition to the applicable fare, you will have to pay an Escort Service fee when your child is traveling as an Unaccompanied Minor. If two or more children in an immediate family are traveling together with the same drop-off/pick-up information, only one Escort Service fee will be assessed.

Depending on the Unaccompanied Minor’s age and itinerary, Island Air charges the following fees:

  • $30 – Escort Service for direct/non-stop flights for Unaccompanied Minors 5-17 years old.
  • $60 – Escort Service for online connections for Unaccompanied Minors 8-11 years old.
  • $30 – Escort Service for connections to another carrier for Unaccompanied Minors 12-17 years old.
