Children under 2 years of age can fly on the lap of an accompanying adult or, if you want to use an approved car safety seat, a separate seat can be reserved for them.
For infants traveling on lap, Alitalia offers the Infant fare which is 10% of the adult fare. If a separate seat is reserved for an infant, a Child fare ticket must be purchased.
Does Alitalia offer special services for infants and children?
Alitalia offers special kids meals that you should request when booking the ticket. For infants from 0 to 2 years, Alitalia offers baby food, including lean meat, vegetables, fruit and dessert. Children from 2 to 12 years old can eat complete meals including hamburgers, sandwiches and packaged sweets.
On intercontinental flights, bassinets are available for infants less than 76 cm long and weighing no more than 11 kg traveling on an adult’s lap and can be requested at the time of booking.
Strollers are transported free of charge for all travel classes and to all destinations when traveling with a child up to 11 years of age. Arriving and transiting passengers can request at check-in to have their strollers returned to them under the aircraft or at the gate. This service is available for flights operated by Alitalia, at Italian airports (Cagliari, Genoa, and Trieste airports are excluded).
Infant on Lap
The general rule that applies to infants traveling on Alitalia flights is that infants travel on an adult’s lap. You can book your flight online when you travel with your baby on your lap. The number of infants may not exceed the number of adults (only one infant on lap per accompanying adult). Infants can travel in an adult’s lap in Magnifica Class (Business Class on long-haul flights), but Alitalia recommends the use of an approved child safety seat.
When your baby is traveling on your lap, you are entitled to an additional bag of up to 10 kg (except with the Light fare, that includes no baggage for the infant), one car seat, and one stroller. You can use your stroller until boarding if the local airport regulations permit. After that, it will be placed in the cargo hold. You should attach a label to the stroller with your contact information. You can pick it up at the baggage claim belt or the designated area for oversized baggage at the arrival airport.
Infants with Reserved Seats
Alitalia allows you to reserve a seat for your baby only on some flights. Before booking your ticket, you should contact the nearest Alitalia Office to enquire about which rules apply for your itinerary and travel class.
Reserving a seat for your infant is not possible online, and must be done by calling Special Assistance at least 48 hours before departure time. When you reserve a seat for your infant, you must bring your own approved child safety seat which must meet a series of requirements:
- Your child safety seat must fit between the airplane’s seat armrests (42 cm / 16.5 in) and be secured into place with the airplane seat’s safety belt (two-part safety seats, seats kept in place by a metal bar or with three attachment points are not allowed).
- You must install it in keeping with the manufacturer’s instructions (facing front or back).
- The child safety seat must have no defects and a visible European Union (or other public authority) seal of approval (e.g., standard UN ECE R44-03 and 44-04, US FMVSS n°. 213, TUV/958-01/2001).
In addition to the baggage allowance corresponding to your travel class, to which your infant is entitled when he/she has a reserved seat, a stroller and a car seat may be checked free of charge.
Toddlers
On domestic flights, children up to 14 years of age, 15 years of age on international flights, must travel with an adult who must be present in the same travel class. If the parent is of minority age, the child can travel accompanied by the parent provided that he/she has been given parental authority. Children 2 to 11 years of age have the same baggage allowance as an adult plus a stroller.
Alitalia offers a special amenity pack to children aged 2 to 12 traveling on intercontinental flights, in all flight classes. The children kit contains a game book, coloring pencils, headphones, a double face mask, toothbrush, toothpaste, and anti-slip socks.
