Healthy newborn babies are allowed to fly only 7 days after birth. However, mothers are advised to consult with the treating doctor regarding increased thrombosis risk after birth.
Does Austrian Airlines offer special services for families with children?
Special services may be pre-booked at the time of making your flight reservation, or at least 24 hours before departure, subject to a surcharge:
- Pre-reservation of seats, for family members to sit together, subject to a seat reservation fee.
- Bassinet (“baby-basket”) on long-haul routes (Boeing 777 and Boeing 767), subject to a seat reservation fee.
- Special child meals (on flights of 3 hours 45 minutes and above, in Economy Class).
- On every Austrian flight, there is a limited number of complimentary infant meals available that you can just ask the cabin crew onboard (no order is required).
Passengers traveling with children board the aircraft first, before all other passengers. Once on board, Austrian Airlines offers toys, games and puzzles for youngsters plus, on long-haul flights only, a special children’s entertainment programme.
Infants
Infants (babies between 0 and 2 years of age not occupying a seat) pay 10% of the applicable fare. To comfortably travel with your baby, Austrian Airlines recommends a bassinet for long-haul flights. A “baby-basket” is a baby bed provided in front of an extra legroom seat and, considering that there are only a few of these special seats available per flight, should be reserved at the time of booking. Although the “baby-basket” itself is free of charge, a seat reservation fee will be charged because the service is only possible if an extra legroom seat is reserved.
If you want to bring your child’s own infant/car seat, you can reserve a seat for your baby at the applicable child fare. Popular brands and models of forward and rearward facing seats, European or US/Canadian certified, are approved for use on Austrian Airlines flights. The bottom of the infant/car seat may not exceed 43 x 43 cm.
The CARES child restraint harness is approved for use on board Austrian Airlines flights. This child restraint harness is restricted to children weighing between 10-20 kg (22-44 pounds) and/or not exceeding a height of 1 m (40 inches). When traveling with a child under 2 years of age, it is required that you notify the Special Cases Desk that you intend to use this restraint harness.
For safety reasons, the use of comfort devices (e.g., bed box, inflatable footrest) is not allowed on board Austrian Airlines flights.
Baggage
Passengers traveling with infants may take one of the following items on board: one baby basket or one child car seat or one fully collapsible stroller (max. 10 kg). On Austrian Airlines flights, infants have a free baggage allowance of 1 bag weighing up to 23 kg, except with the Economy Light fare. A fully collapsible baby stroller weighing up to 10 kg will be transported without charge, and, where local official directives permit, you may take it to the aircraft door. Strollers weighing more than 10 kg must be checked.
Children
The child fare is offered on Austrian Airlines flights for children between 2 and 12 years of age. The child fare is 75% of the fare for an adult. Children aged 2 years and older have the same free baggage allowance as adults. In addition, for small children, a fully collapsible stroller with a maximum weight of 10 kg will be transported free of charge. On certain stations, the stroller’s weight and taking it up to the aircraft might be restricted based on local official directives.
