Austrian Airlines minors flying alone

Does Austrian Airlines offer services for children traveling alone?

For children traveling alone, Austrian Airlines offers supervision service, Unaccompanied Minor Service, against a surcharge. In the case of codeshare flights, the operating carrier’s rules are applicable.

From what age are children allowed to travel unaccompanied on Austrian Airlines flights?

On Austrian Airlines flights, children between 2 and 5 years of age may only travel when accompanied by an adult. Due to flight safety reasons, children must travel in the same class with the accompanying adult.

Austrian Airlines allows children between 5 and 11 years to fly alone. The Unaccompanied Minor Service is mandatory for them.

For young children between 12 and 18 years of age traveling alone, there are no restrictions or special requirements. The Unaccompanied Minors Service is optional and available on parents’ special request.

Unaccompanied Minor Service

Booking a flight for children traveling alone is not possible online. You must book a flight for your child traveling alone by calling Austrian Airlines Customer Service Center. You must organize any necessary travel documents (passport, travel insurance, visa for the destination country, etc.) and arrange for your child to be escorted to the departure airport and to be met on arrival by adult persons. Names, phone numbers, and addresses of the adults bringing the child to the airport and picking up the child from the airport must be provided at the time of booking.

Before taking your child to the airport, you should fill in the Handling Advice form and print four copies. Unaccompanied Minors can check in online, but the option to print the boarding pass will not be available. The boarding pass will be issued only at the airport.

Upon arriving at the airport, you must go to a check-in counter where all necessary formalities are completed: Austrian Airlines staff issues the boarding pass, provides your child with a small travel pouch for all essential documents, and takes the child into custody. Ground staff will accompany your child to the aircraft and will hand him/her over to the flight crew. However, you must remain at the airport until the flight has actually departed.

During the entire flight, the Unaccompanied Minor is in the custody of the flight attendants. Upon disembarking, the child is met by Austrian Airlines’ ground staff and handed over to the designated person (as stated in the Handling Advice form). The person must be available at the airport at the flight’s scheduled arrival time and prove his/her identity.
