Baggage and Carry-on China Southern Airlines

What is the carry-on allowance?

As a general rule, the carry-on allowance for China Southern Airlines is established by weight, size, or by the number of luggage pieces. From the weight point of view, each passenger is allowed to carry in the cabin no more than 5 kg / 11 lb of personal belongings.

Regarding the number of items, the values vary based on the ticket class. Passengers possessing First class tickets are allowed to carry 2 items, while all other passengers (Business class, Premium Economy class and Economy class) can carry only one item.

Regardless of the class of travel, the volume of each piece of baggage must not exceed 20 x 40 x 55 cm / 7 x 15 x 21 in, otherwise it will be considered checked baggage.

What is the free checked baggage allowance?

Although there are many criteria based on which the free checked baggage allowance is established (such as the class of travel, the route, whether the flight is domestic or international, if the passenger is an adult, an infant, or a member of the Sky Pearl Club etc.), certain general lines could be drawn.1

China Southern Airlines’ travelers are entitled to a free baggage allowance of 40 kg / 88 lb for the First class, 30 kg / 66 lb for Business class and 20 kg / 44 lb for Premium Economy and Economy class. Infants benefit from a 10 kg / 22 lb baggage allowance.

What is the maximum weight and size allowed?

Depending on whether the route is domestic or international, your checked baggage will be charged whether on a weight concept, or on a piece-based system.2

On the domestic routes, the rate for the overweight baggage is 1.5% of the applicable one-way Economy class ticket on the day of billing per kilogram, this charge being calculated in RMB currency. Subsequently, on national routes one piece of checked baggage must not exceed 50 kg / 110 lb, and must measure less than 40 x 60 x 100 cm / 15 x 23 x 39 in.

International flights have their maximum values set depending on whether USA is involved or not in the route, regardless of the fact that we are talking about an international, regional or domestic flight connecting with them.

When the USA routes are involved, the maximum weight of each baggage piece is set to 45 kg / 90 lb, while its total linear dimensions must be under 158 cm / 62 in.

When the USA routes are not involved, each piece of checked luggage must not exceed 32 kg / 70 lb, and its total linear dimensions must not be above 158 cm / 62 in.

All international and regional flights carried by China Southern Airlines will have their overweight baggage charge established on a piece-based system, as follows:

Carry-on baggage

One passenger is permitted a carry-on allowance of 5 kg / 11 lb. Depending on the class of ticket, if you’re travelling on the First class, you can take with yourself on the plane two pieces of free carry-on luggage, while travelling on the Business, Premium Economy or Economy class allows you to a single carry-on item.

The carry-on baggage must not exceed 20 x 40 x 44 cm / 7 x 15 x 21 in (in volume), or 115 cm / 45 in (in total linear dimensions), because it should be able to fit in the overhead compartment or in the space under the seats. Should it exceed the abovementioned limits, the flight staff is entitled to deny its carriage in the cabin, and you will have to register it as checked luggage.

Among the carry-on baggage you can count one foldable stroller, other daily use items or infant articles also being permitted in the passenger cabin, but only if the security staff check them out and give their permission for carriage. You can also bring your medication with yourself on the plane, but once again only if it complies with the security policies.3

It is highly recommended that you include in your carry-on baggage all the valuables you might want to transport (important documents, precious metals, jewellery, cash etc.). Placing them in the checked baggage should be seen as a possible risk, and their eventual damage or loss fall entirely on you.

Liquid articles policy

You should know that you cannot take liquid food for your infant onboard, but you can easily apply for special baby food or water for preparing the milk powder by talking to the flight crew. There are special regulations concerning liquid articles, restrictions that China Southern Airlines handles rather similarly on domestic and international flights.4

Mainly, you are allowed to take onboard a volume equal to 100 ml of liquid, contained in a 100 ml bottle, and wrapped in a clear, zipper-sealed plastic bag, of a 1 liter capacity. Failing to comply with any of these three aspects of the rule will make your liquid ineligible for carriage and may be confiscated at security check (for example, even if you meet the 100 ml volume limit, it will be rejected if contained in a larger than 100 ml bottle).

At the security checkpoint, liquid articles will be screened separately, and inspected for regulations clearance. Each liquid item must be placed in a single zipped bag separately for screening, even if the bag is of 1 liter capacity and the liquid item is carried in a 100 ml container. Duty-free liquids carried into China must be transported in sealed containers, zip-top clear plastic bags, and accompanied by their receipt.

Checked baggage

Try and allow yourself plenty of time to undergo all the baggage check-in formalities, as, once you arrive at the airport, all your checked luggage must be weighted, inspected and tagged for easy identification.

The carrier will issue a standard “baggage tag identification voucher”, which will be tied to your luggage by a specially designed staff member at the counters. This tag will contain a barcode, your name and flight number, so you won’t have to self-mark your baggage yourself.

You should be careful about what you include into your checked baggage, as certain articles are forbidden or not recommended overall: travel documents, confidential documents, precious metals, jewellery, cash, paintings, your daily medicine, fragile electronic devices or their components etc. In an eventual case of loss or damage to your luggage wrongfully containing items from the aforementioned categories, you will be compensated for the baggage itself, not for its contents.

There are cases in which your ticket may become Business class, instead of First class, as you initially booked it. Should such a situation occur, your baggage allowance will remain in accordance with the First class limitations, since this situation will not be considered your fault.5

Domestic transportation of checked baggage

On domestic routes, the free baggage allowance for First class passengers is 40 kg / 88 lb, Business class passengers benefit from a 30 kg / 66 lb free baggage allowance, while Economy class travelers have their allowance limited to 20 kg / 44 lb. Furthermore, the free baggage allowance for minors is the same as for adults, while infants benefit from a 10 kg / 22 lb allowance.

Sky Pearl Club members, whether they possess gold or silver cards, are privileged with an extra piece of free checked baggage, regardless of the class of travel. Of course, this type of allowance applies for piece-based systems.

International and regional transportation of checked baggage

While flying internationally with China Southern Airlines, your baggage allowance will be established on a piece-based concept. For example, gold and silver card members of the Sky Pearl Club benefit from an additional baggage piece free of charge, regardless of the ticket class, when travelling to Europe.

The checked baggage regulations regarding international and regional flights are divided into two categories: one that involves flights to and from Japan, Moscow, Oceania and USA, and another one which includes all remaining international destinations. For these routes, the baggage carriage rules apply as follows:

* Size is referred to as total linear dimension, calculated as Length + Width + Height.

On all international routes, infants without a seat are allowed one piece of free checked baggage, with a maximum weight of 10 kg / 22 lb, and its total linear dimensions no more than 115 cm / 45 in, a foldable pushchair or stroller being also accepted.

The abovementioned baggage carriage rules also apply for group passengers. On the other hand, overseas students, seamen, laborers and emigrants, provided they back up their special travelling status with relevant proof at the check-in counters, benefit from an extra piece of free checked baggage.

When travelling to the USA, don’t look surprised if your baggage will be opened and inspected, as these are the requirements of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). They are allowed to freely inspect any piece of luggage that looks suspicious, so try and use a special lock for your baggage, which can be opened only by yourself and the TSA staff.6

Special baggage

Golf and ski equipment, fishing, surfing and windsurfing equipment, guns used for athletic contests, musical and precision instruments, electrical equipment etc. are considered special baggage and will be treated accordingly, meaning they will be subject to special charges.

Transporting such baggage might require prior consultation with China Southern Airlines (for example, should you decide to check-in your bicycle, you need the airline’s approval in advance). You are strongly advised to call the sales service hotline (95539), in order to discuss your special baggage’s terms of carriage.7

Lost and found

Currently, the Lost and Found Baggage Service is only available in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, but you if find yourself in the situation of having lost a piece of your luggage, you can call China Southern Airlines call center (020-95539), the Domestic Baggage Tracing Department located in Guangzhou (020-86122921), or the International Baggage Tracing Department (at 020-86122913).

Once you acknowledged the loss or damage of your baggage, you should immediately contact the airport service counter, to allow the searching process to commence in the shortest time possible. However, if the loss or damage of your luggage is not clearly the airline’s fault, you will not be compensated for it.

After informing the airport’s staff about the situation, you may be required to fill in a Lost Baggage Form. Later on, if you want to check the status of your lost luggage, you can make use of the Online Baggage Inquiry Service8, by accessing China Southern Airlines’ website.9

When found, the lost item(s) will be sent to any address appointed by you, or handed over any person that shall provide the relevant documentation (ID card, letter of attorney etc.) proving the rightful owner of the baggage entitled them to pick it up and retrieve it.

Unclaimed lost items, whether they were reported or not, are stored by the airline for 30 days in the Baggage Tracing Department. After this period expires, the airline reserves its right to dispose of the items as they see fit.10

Baggage delivery

China Southern Airlines works with a specialized company to offer its passengers a logistics service, through which your baggage is collected and delivered according to your needs.

As far as domestic flights are involved, passengers are supposed to collect their luggage upon arrival. Should they fail to do that, a storage charge will take effect from the second day of arrival.11 90 days is the maximum storage time an undelivered piece of luggage gets, afterwards being disposed of. If you request its delivery, your baggage will be handed over to you based on the recognition tag attached to it. If, upon collecting your baggage, you do not submit a written objection, China Southern will consider it has been delivered properly, and will not be held responsible if any later objections arise.

When travelling on an international route with multiple segments, you might be required to claim your baggage multiple times, during some of the stopovers. Failing to do so will result in the enforcement of the same policies as for domestic flights.

Baggage claim

The form of compensation you will receive if your baggage is damaged (partially or totally) during a China Southern flight depends on certain well established criteria, as well as if the flight is domestic or international.

First of all, should your baggage be lost or damaged, you will receive a compensation of whether 100 Yuan per kilogram, or less - if your baggage was established to worth less than that. Secondly, should your baggage be damaged only, the airline will offer to whether support the repair expenses, or compensate for its lost value in an amount less than 100 Yuan per kilogram of its actual weight. Thirdly, if a value has been already declared for a piece of luggage, upon loss it will be compensated whether according to the declared value, or to its actual value (should a value higher than the real one be declared).

Should your luggage contain items that damage your bag, the other passengers’ baggage or carrier property, you will be the only one held responsible for it, and will have to compensate for all the losses, as well as for all the expenses paid by China Southern Airlines.

On the other hand, the compensation limit for damaged, destroyed or lost baggage involved in international flights will be set according to the Montreal Protocol, more specifically at 1131 Special Drawing Rights for each passenger.

11Perishable items in the baggage will be disposed of 24 hours after arrival, the owner’s permission not being required.
