Midwest Airlines Baggage and Carry-on

What is my carry-on allowance when traveling on Frontier Airlines flights?

For all passengers, the “one carry-on bag plus one personal item” policy applies on all Frontier Airlines flights. If your itinerary involves a codeshare flight operated by Great Lakes, you should know that Great Lakes Airlines limits the carry-on allowance to one personal item. Your carry-on bag will be checked using a valet baggage service when boarding the aircraft and then made available at the gate upon arrival.

What is Frontier Airlines’ policy on checked baggage allowance?

Your baggage allowance on Frontier Airlines flights is based on the fare purchased and status of your membership in the EarlyReturns mileage program:

  • Basic Fare – there is no free baggage allowance; baggage fees apply to each checked bag.
  • Economy Fare – there is no free baggage allowance; baggage fees apply to each checked bag.
  • Classic and Classic Plus Fares2 standard bags may be checked free of charge.
  • EarlyReturns Summit members2 standard bags may be checked free of charge for all types of fares; the same baggage allowance applies for traveling companions in the same PNR and immediate family members (even when not in the same PNR).
  • EarlyReturns Ascent members2 standard bags may be checked free of charge for all types of fares; this baggage allowance does not apply to traveling companions, whether or not in the same PNR.

A standard checked bag must comply with the following size and weight limitations: no more than 62 inches in linear dimension and 50 lbs in weight. Additional fees will apply to any bag exceeding one of these size and weight limitations.

Which are the rules when checking baggage for codeshare or connecting flights?

On codeshare flights operated by Great Lakes Airlines, Frontier Airlines' baggage fees will apply. When your itinerary includes a flight operated by Great Lakes Airlines, your baggage will be checked through to your final destination by the airline operating your first flight, whether it is Frontier Airlines or Great Lakes Airlines.

On interline itineraries (itinerary involving travel on Frontier Airlines and another airline), Frontier’s baggage fees and allowances may not apply. Frontier Airlines will honor baggage allowances and collect baggage fees acording to the DOT regulations:

  • On domestic itineraries, the allowances and fees of the first marketing carrier will apply for all travel on the ticket, including inbound flights.
  • On international itineraries, the allowances and fees of the most significant carrier will apply for all travel on the ticket, including inbound flights. The most significant carrier is usually the first airline operating an international flight on the ticket.

When you connect between Frontier Airlines and any of its interline partners, your baggage will be checked through to your final destination provided the Frontier Airlines flight and the other airline flight(s) are on the same ticket. If you have a separate ticket for a connecting flight on another airline, Frontier will only check your baggage on the Frontier Airlines flight and not on the other airline’s flight, and you will need to claim your baggage after your Frontier flight and re-check it with the other airline.

Carry-on

Frontier Airlines allows each passenger to board with one piece of carry-on baggage that must fit underneath the seat or in an enclosed overhead bin, weigh no more than 35 lbs, and not exceed dimensions of 24” in length x 15.5” in width x 9.5” in height.

In addition to one carry-on bag, Frontier Airlines allows each passenger to board with one personal item that may consist of a briefcase, handbag, pocketbook, umbrella, walking stick, camera, binoculars, or laptop computer case. Your personal item must fit underneath the seat in front of the passenger and not exceed dimensions of 18” length x 14” width x 8” height.

Passengers in Boarding Zones 2, 3, and 4 who will not be utilizing overhead space will board the aircraft immediately after Boarding Zone 1 (Express Boarding).

Frontier Airlines allows passengers to carry on board only the following items, in addition to the carry-on allowance:

  • One wheelchair or mobility device on Airbus aircraft only.
  • Crutches, canes, braces, Portable Oxygen Concentrators, respiratory devices or other assistive devices.
  • A coat or wrap.
  • An infant bag.
  • One child safety seat used to transport the infant/child.
  • Reading material (a reasonable amount).
  • A foot rug (3 ft x 2 ft maximum) for use during prayer.

A Gate Check Fee will be charged for any bag brought to the departure gate that exceeds the allowable dimensions for the carry-on bag:

  • $ 100 – passengers traveling on Basic tickets.
  • $ 25 for travel on or after August 6, 2013, through January 5, 2014 – for passengers traveling on Economy, Classic and Classic Plus tickets.
  • $ 35 for travel on or after January 6, 2014 – passengers traveling on Economy, Classic and Classic Plus tickets.

Checked Baggage

Baggage must be checked at the ticket counter at least 45 minutes before your departure for domestic flights and 60 minutes before departure for international flights, but will be accepted by Frontier Airlines no earlier than 4 hours before departure time. However, ticket counters may not open until 2 or 3 hours prior to scheduled departure in some smaller cities. Passenger who have already checked in online and paid their baggage fees have two options to drop their bags faster:

  • Bag Drop lines, designated lines at the Frontier airport check-in counter available at all airports served by Frontier except Baltimore (BWI), Branson (BKG), Chicago-O’Hare (ORD), Cleveland (CLE), Grand Rapids (GRR), and South Bend (SBN).
  • Curbside Bag Drop lines available when you are departing from Denver (DEN), Las Vegas (LAS), Los Angeles (LAX), and Washington, D.C. – Reagan National (DCA).

Baggage that does not comply with standard bag requirements (62 inches in linear dimension and 50 lbs in weight) will be considered overweight and/or oversized baggage and will incur additional fees. Frontier Airlines will not accept baggage that weighs more than 100 pounds or exceeds 110 linear inches (length + width + depth).

Exceptions

All wheelchairs and mobility devices are accepted as checked baggage in the cargo compartment. These items are not counted as part of a passenger's baggage allowance and baggage fees will not apply. Child restraint systems and strollers are accepted as checked baggage free of charge and will not count toward the passenger’s baggage allowance, when traveling with children.

Active duty military personnel with ID will not be assessed bag fees. The exception doesn’t apply to family members or traveling companions. Special/Fragile item fees still apply (dry ice fee, pet in cabin fee).

Bicycles, golf equipment, skis (snow and water), and snowboards are exempt from oversized baggage fees, but checked baggage and overweight fees apply. Other special items and sporting equipment are subject to checked, oversize, and overweight baggage fees.

Fees

Standard baggage fees can be paid during Online Check-in. Overweight, oversized and excess baggage fees must be paid at the airport. Also, Frontier Airlines can waive fees for items exempt from baggage fees only at the airport.

Each piece of checked baggage over any allowance based on the Fare Option purchased for Frontier flights will be charged an excess baggage fee. For bags that do not fall into the standard baggage category overweight and/or oversized baggage fees will be assessed. Excess baggage is subject to oversized and overweight fees. Overweight and oversized baggage fees are charged separately. Therefore, one item can incur multiple fees: a passenger traveling on an Economy ticket, checking a third bag that has over 62 linear inches and weighs more than 50 lbs, will be charged three fees (excess baggage fee plus oversized baggage fee plus overweight baggage fee).

The following baggage fees apply for one-way directional travel wholly on Frontier Airlines (domestic and international flights):

Baggage Service

If you discover that you have left an item on a plane when still in the airport, you should return to the gate or ticket counter and ask if a customer service representative may be able to help you retrieve the item immediately. If you've already left the airport, you can submit a lost item report with a detailed description of your lost item. Only if your lost item is found within 30 days, Frontier Airlines will contact you. You might want to consider contacting the TSA or checking with the lost and found office at that airport if you think that your item may have been left near a security checkpoint, or in an airport public area.

If your baggage is damaged, delayed or lost, you must report property loss or damage before you leave the airport. All written preliminary notices must be submitted in person within 4 hours after the arrival of your flight. No claim for any loss of, damage to, or delay in the delivery of any baggage will be reviewed by Frontier Airlines unless written notice of the claim is provided within 45 days of the alleged incident.

For domestic flights, liability for loss or damage to checked baggage is limited to $ 3,300 per ticketed passenger. For international travel (including domestic portions of international itineraries), liability for loss, delay or damage to checked baggage is limited by the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention. Frontier Airlines will not be liable for certain items included in checked baggage, with or without its knowledge, such as money, precious metals, jewelry, keys, paintings, computer equipment (including hardware, software, and all accessories), sporting equipment, musical instruments, business documents, etc.
