LATAM Airlines flying with babies

Are there any conditions for the acceptance of children on LATAM Airlines flights?

If the child is up to 1 week old, he or she will require medical certification in order to fly. Minors up to the age of 5 years must travel with a legal adult on the same airplane. Minors aged between 5 and 11 years can travel with passengers aged between 12 and 17 years but only on a one-to-one basis.

Does LATAM Airlines offer discounts for infants and children?

For infants without a seat, the infant fare is, usually, 10% of the adult fare. For flights within Chile, for infants without a seat you will pay only boarding fees and taxes.

For children from 2 to 11 years of age, child fares may be available on certain routes. Child discounts vary between 25% and 33% of the adult fare and are applicable only for travel in the Economy cabin. If the child will travel in Premium Economy or Business cabin, the child fare is unavailable.

If your infant becomes a child during the trip (on his/her second birthday), you must purchase a ticket to ensure the return trip. You may opt to purchase a ticket only for the necessary segments, or to purchase a round-trip child fare ticket. Until the day your child turns 2, you must use a child safety seat approved for use in aircraft if you have reserved a seat for the entire trip.

In the Economy cabin, each adult can share the seat with an infant (baby under 2 years of age) paying only a percentage of the fare plus boarding fees and taxes. If an adult is traveling with two babies, then, for their safety, the adult will need an additional seat and must pay the fare for one child. In this case, the baby will require either a child safety seat certified for use on an airplane, which must be provided by the passenger.

A baby may be safer and more comfortable in a bassinet. To be eligible for this service, the baby must not weigh more than 10 kg and must be less than 71 cm long. Requests for bassinets should be made at least 48 hours before departure LATAM Airlines Brasil Contact Center or Sales Office. Bassinets are not available in Premium Business Class. Bassinets are available on the following aircraft, in Economy Class:

  • A330 and B767 – 1 bassinet per aircraft.
  • B777 and B787 – 2 bassinets per aircraft.

When you request a bassinet, a seat in the front rows of the aircraft will be reserved for you, your infant, and a companion traveling under the same reservation. For the other passengers listed on the same reservation, seats will be assigned subject to availability and in accordance with the conditions of the fare paid.

The bassinet service charge is:

  • USD 45 – flights within South America and the following routes New York – Toronto, Madrid – Frankfurt, Punta Cana – Miami, Santiago de Chile – Easter Island, and Auckland – Sydney.
  • USD 140 – flights between South America and North America, Europe, the Caribbean or Oceania (including the route Santiago – Papeete).

In countries where they apply, sales taxes will be added to this charge. LATAM Pass/Fidelidade members with Black and Black Signature cards are exempt from this charge.

Baggage Allowances

The baggage allowance for children and infants paying a child fare is the same as for adult passengers, dictated by the fare and flight. For infants without a seat, the following allowance apply:

  • 1 piece of checked baggage up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
  • a stroller, child seat approved for use on board aircraft, or bassinet, which may be carried in the passenger cabin if there is space available.

Children’s Menu

On international routes, LATAM Chile offers special meals for children. Adults can request this service at least 24 working hours before the flight. The service is not available on domestic flights or flights within South America, or for children aged under 2 years.
