History of Hi Fly

  • Incorporated in 2005, Hi Fly is a Portuguese airline specialized in high-quality charter and wet-leasing services. Wet-leasing, the supply of aircraft with crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) for airlines, tour operators, governments, companies, and individuals, is Hi Fly core business. Hi Fly is operating worldwide, being certified to fly to Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, India and elsewhere.
  • In April 2006, Hi Fly concluded the initial certification process, obtaining its Air Operator Certificate, issued by the civil aviation authorities of Portugal (ANAC) and in full compliance with all the EU-OPS and EASA (the European Aviation Safety Agency) regulations. Today, Hi Fly is an EU-OPS carrier, FAA approved, EASA and IOSA certified.
  • In 2008, to its first aircraft, an Airbus A330-300, Hi Fly added two A310-300s that were leased to Oman Air on the airline’s first long-haul routes (to London – Heathrow and Bangkok). New aircraft, one A330-200 and two A340-500s, were delivered from Airbus in 2008-2009. The two A340-500s were used for approximately 5 years on behalf of Arik Air in Nigeria, painted in its colors until Hi Fly repossessed the airframes in spring 2015.
  • In September 2011, Hi Fly concluded the IOSA certification, in accordance with the latest and update Criteria (ISM Version 4).
  • In March 2013, Hi Fly Malta was created as Hi Fly’s Maltese subsidiary operating a fleet of Airbus A340-600s. Like its parent, Hi Fly Malta offers charter and ACMI services, mostly on behalf of tour operators or other airlines. The airline focuses on long-haul high-density passenger operations and thereby only operates large long-haul aircraft. As of June 2015, Hi Fly Malta has no longer any aircraft in operation; the formerly four operated Airbus A340-600s were sold to Al-Naser Airlines and Mahan Air.
  • In 2013, four A330s and A340s were added to the fleet. In February 2014, Hi Fly acquired its first narrow-body aircraft, an A321-200 that was leased to the Belgian Army in replacement of the former A330-300.
  • In 2017, Hi Fly started the renewal of its fleet with a direct order to Airbus for two new Airbus A330 200 aircraft and two second hand Airbus A380 aircraft.
  • In 2018, Hi Fly added to its fleet an Airbus A380 aircraft, the largest passenger airliner in the history of aviation. As of November 2018, Hi Fly has an all-Airbus fleet of 13 aircraft: one A321, four A330s, seven A340s and one A380.
  • In 2019, Hi Fly is expecting the arrival of the first new generation Airbus A330 900neo aircraft.
  • No fatal accidents involving Hi Fly aircraft were registered so far.
