- On the 14th of September, 2011, Air Astana was founded in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
- Its first three Boeing 737s were leased in May 2002, followed by three Boeing 757s that were added to the fleet in 2004, together with five Fokker 50s that were acquired to help develop its domestic network.
- After Air Kazakhstan was shut down by the government in February 2004, Air Astana became the national carrier, taking over all routes previously operated by Air Kazakhstan.
- In 2007, Air Astana introduced its first wide-body aircraft, two Boeing 767-300s.
- One year later, Air Astana became one of of the few airlines in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to be admitted to the register of the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA).
- With over 3,000 employees, Air Astana recently partnered with Lufthansa to expand its flight offering, including Lufthansa's frequent flyer programme Miles & More.
- The airline is currently owned by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan (51%) and BAE Systems (49%).
- Until now, there were no notable incidents involving Air Astana flights.
